My
husband and I just got back from a seven day hunting trip in Colorado.
The first 3 days my husband and I walked all day long up and down mountains...well,
the 1st day we went to what they called the Mesa, mule deer hunting, but
all we saw were doe mule deers. The 2nd day we climbed all the way
to the top of a mountain on the main property..we left at day light and
we reached the top at about 1:30 p.m.. we rested for a bit and started
down, anyway, it was a lot quicker coming down the mountain than going
up. We got almost to the bottom and found a good spot to watch from
so we sat down to wait..about 6:30 p.m. we saw our 1st Bull Elk coming
down and across the mountain in front of us. My husband got up and
started easing down throught the brush and was about 27 yards and drawing
his bow when the wind shifted directions and the elk smelled him and took
off like a shot. Boy was he upset, I told him it was early yet not
to worry. About 7:30 p.m. we saw a BIG....cinnamon colored
bear coming our way and Mike, my husband, told me to get a yardage reading
on him...he was only about 30 yards at that time...Mike said shoot him,
and I said no, and he said shoot the bear and I told him NO.....at that
time the bear heard us and stood up to look at us, he was about as tall
if not taller than me....needless to say I did not shoot the Bear.
Mike was so mad, but I had heard and read to many stories about people
shooting bears on the ground and getting malled before the bear died.
When we got back to the cabin I talked one of the guys, Kerry, into letting
me use his tree climber. So from then on I hunted up a tree and Mike
walked. On Thursday, 7th, I saw 2 mule deer does about 6:30 p.m.
and at about 7 p.m. I saw the brush moving down in front of me and then
I saw a red head of a cow elk. At that time she was about 30 yards
in front of me in heavy brush. I stood up waited for her head to
go down and pulled back my bow and started following her trying to get
a good shot. I forgot about the aspen tree right next to me...I bumped
it with my arrow and had to let my bow down and pull again...boy you talk
about getting shacky...I thought for sure she had heard me and was going
to run, but the wind and everything were all in my favor...she stepped
out from behind the aspen and never knew what hit her..she only ran about
34 yards from my stand and fell. Boy was it exciting....right after
that I heard a Bull Elk start bulgeling and I thought...OH NO...if I had
only just waited..but he did not come in close, I still had my cow..at
dark I got down and went to meet Mike at the 4 wheelers. I held my
flashlight over my head and did a little dance on top of the hill where
we were parked, I knew Mike could see me, he was coming down off a hill
just opposite where we were parked. Anyway, we got back to the cabin
and another guy said he had one down but did not know if it was dead or
not...we went and got mine first, took it back to the cabin and spent the
rest of the night until 3 in the morning looking for his...we did not find
it then. The next morning while we were cutting up my elk they went
out again and found Kenneth's cow and brought her in. Friday morning
it rained almost all morning, the guys went to a new location to hunt,
the owner had come by and said he had seen a big herd of Elk at another
spot, so that was where they went. Mike got a young cow Elk Friday
evening. So all but 2 guys got elk....we gave Mike's elk to them
for helping haul mine out of the mountains. It took all 5 of us too
get her loaded on a 4 wheeler. Kerry, the one who let me use his
tree lounge climber had a brand new Yamaha grizzly 600, and we loaded her
on it and you would not believe he road that thing sitting on top of the
elk out of those mountains. There were a few hairy moments when we
all had to hold him down to keep from tumpping over. BOY Did we have
fun. Anyway, that is the story..I hope you liked it. We had
a great time and weather was fantastic. I can't wait for October
deer season to open.
