Judy L

My First Tom

(or Jake if you wish)

Hi! I'm Judy L., I live in the Southeastern corner of Washington State, along the Snake River and within a few minutes drive of the Blue Mountains.
Saturday-April 15th- was opening day for turkeys in our area and I had made plans to hunt with my brother-in-law (Dan) while hubby stayed home and entertained the new pup(spent all morning at the local tackle shop with his guide buddies -he did!). We left well before daylight to
reach the area and set up before dawn. All this accomplished, we had a couple of birds working within a half hour of legal time, but encountered severe interference from another hunter-one of these guys that tries to run em down. We picked up and moved to a new location and
immediately got a response from two toms. Soon after the birds started working, we heard hens in the draw below us, the toms moved in closer but apparently were seduced by the real thing.
We moved down the ridge a ways and tried again-we stopped for a moment to catch our breath and Dan gave a couple of yelps on the box and got an immediate (and nearby) response from a group of birds, being new
to this, I was caught without my headnet, in the open, gun out-of-hand and away from cover( I'm new to this-the brother-in-law is on his own). The best recovery amounted to getting the Browning in my hand and trying to look like I belonged there! The birds were THERE! all three of them.
They seemed a little suspicious and stayed in the cover along the clearing, offering only poor opportunities for a shot. I let the birds move away and out of sight and then we scurried up the hill and around the path the birds had taken. We setup again(with a little better preparation) and Dan began his I'm a lonesome hen call and darned if  they didn't respond, not a hundred yards from our last fiasco.
All three birds came into view quickly, all Jakes, but I wasn't about to be picky on my first tom, after what Dan thought was an awful long time, I picked the last bird in line and placed a load of 4s in his head and neck.
All done at 8:30 AM-and that bird was Sooo tasty. We do have an option for three birds in this state--Naw- better leave it alone!
